I don’t get it. If the arrow of time comes from the second law (increasing entropy) and is subjective, wouldn’t that mean that entropy is subjective?!?
you’re exactly right: entropy is subjective. That is due to the fact (according to Rovelli) that our measurements depend on perspective are imperfect and therefore the measured entropy depends on perspective.
A system in a maximum entropy state is in equilibrium and shows no dynamics, while a low entropy state can lead to significant dynamics and phenomena like e.g. convection cells. Life on earth depends on the temperature difference between sun and space as an energy source. In a maximum entropy state life is not possible. So the existence of all these phenomena would depend on perspective?
Thank you Fedde. Rovelli is now on my e-reader! Got the Dutch version though (“Het mysterie van de tijd”) because the original apparently is in Italian, and I might as well go for Dutch if I’m going to read a translation anyway.
Why would having preferred variables help? E.g. the cosmic microwave background provides us with a preferred reference frame, yet this does not invalidate special relativity.
Maybe objective time will tie in well with the law of the excluded middle and free will. As in, either objective time + excluded middle + determinism, OR subjective time + no excluded middle + free will. Both consistent with observations, and no way to proof one over the other.
